They can still have a positive effect in making you think outside the box, but I'd say that this is more a happy accident than intention and definitely not a "strength" of the instrument. There are simple technical limitations - "We didn't have enough processing power" or "adding that additional high pass filter for all voices would've made the synth too expensive". Whether or not a limitation is a good thing is of course subjective in the end, but if one wanted to generalize, I think the best approach would be to look at the intentions behind the design decision of the limitation. I think the main problem is that the term "limitations" can be applied to different parts in the design process and while some limitations can be positive, others are more likely to be negative. I personally think that many people that claim that limitations are a great thing are confusing different usages of the term a little bit.
So I'm wondering where the more experienced synthesists stand: Do you generally appreciate your synth's limitations, or regret them? If you find they help boost your creativity, why is that? Since I can't afford an ocean of modules, please help me change my perspective and start appreciating the limitations of my setup :) If my synth doesn't allow me to do such things, I'm left feeling like "cool sound, but it could be cooler".

For instance, I might wish I had just one more LFO to give the filter more interest, or the ability to use noise as a mod source.
Similarly, I also hear people talking about how the boundless flexibility and modulation/routing options in, for example, modular synths can overwhelm and become a burden to creativity or getting anything done.īut personally, I more often find my synth's limitations frustrating than liberating. Very often I read and hear music professionals talking about embracing the limitations in their synths helps them become more creative.
